Obituary of Alice Raht Howell

Alice Edmiston Raht Howell, 94, of Lookout Mountain, TN, died peacefully early Thursday morning, April 30 in a health care facility with her son by her side. She was the daughter of the late Edward Dombois and Sarah Taylor Raht. She was preceded in death by her husband, Archibald Howell of Marietta, GA. She is survived by her son, Archibald Raht Howell, daughter-in-law Susan Starnes Howell, and grandsons William Pesterfield and Samuel Pesterfield, all of Lookout Mountain. Mrs. Howell was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church where for many years she performed a loving service of sending cards to members for birthdays, anniversaries, bereavement, or getting well from illness.
A graduate of The Bright School and Girls Preparatory School, Mrs. Howell shared with friends and family fond stories of her school days and growing up in Riverview. She went on to receive her B.S. degree in Elementary Education and graduated Cum Laude from the University of Chattanooga, where she was a member of Chi Omega sorority.
She later obtained her Master’s degree in Education from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. She was named a member of Kappa Delta Pi, honor society in Education, and elected to Alpha Society for academic excellence.
A Lookout Mountain resident for over 30 years, Mrs. Howell was a first grade teacher and later the Librarian at Lookout Mountain School. She was elected to Delta Kappa Gamma, honorary association for teachers. In 1971, she was awarded a Valley Forge Teacher’s medal by the Freedom Foundation.
She was a past member of the Symphony Guild and League of Women Voters, as well as the Florence Crittendon Board, a member-at-large of the D.A.R., and the Lookout Mountain chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Mrs. Howell was also a former member of the Lookout Mountain Book Club and Lookout Mountain Beautiful Garden Club, both of which she served as president. In 1996, she was awarded by her Garden Club the Anna Law Spirit Award, which is given to the member who exhibits the most enthusiasm and dedication in participation of club activities.
A celebration of her life will be on Tuesday, May 5 at 11:30 a.m. at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Joe Novenson officiating. The family will receive visitors from 10:00 a.m. until service time at 11:30. There will be a private burial for family at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
