Obituary of Jacquelin Buttram Leffers

Jacquelin Buttram Leffers died at her home on November 8, 2015 after a long illness. Born in Atlanta, Ga. November 4,1928 to Col. Hubert Leslie Jacobs and Marjorie Olds Jacobs, she was a graduate of North Fulton High School. After attending Sweet Briar College she graduated from Agnes Scott College in Atlanta. Married to Dr. Thomas L. Buttram in 1949, she taught 4th grade for several years at Morris Brandon School in Atlanta.
Upon returning to her husband’s hometown of Chattanooga with him, she became active in community affairs, including being a founding member of the Chattanooga chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and serving as State Director. She also served as President of the Chattanooga Medical Auxiliary. Mrs. Leffers was a long time member of the Woodland Garden Club. She had a lifelong interest in antiques, and co-managed an antique store in North Georgia for several years.
Mrs. Leffers relocated to Hilton Head Island in 1975 where she developed a love for the Carolina Low Country. She began publishing magazine articles on travel during this period. After several years there she moved to Washington D.C. where she obtained a paralegal degree from Georgetown University and worked for the Charles Walker lobbying firm. Following that, she relocated to Atlanta and became a real estate agent for Harry Norman Realtors. In 1986 she returned to Chattanooga where she met Col. James Leffers and retired with him to Callawassie Island, S.C. Many happy years of world travel and low country life followed. Upon his death she returned to Lookout Mountain , where she joined The Church of the Good Shepherd and resumed many community activities. She was a proud member of Sam’s Club.
Mrs. Leffers is predeceased by her daughter, Elise Latham Buttram, first husband Dr. Thomas L. Buttram , and second husband Col. James Leffers, in addition to son-in-laws Summerfield K. Johnston lll and James Warren Newman, Jr. She is survived by daughter Jacquelyn Buttram Wright and husband Barry of Rome, Ga., daughter Leslie Buttram Johnston of Palm Beach, Fl., granddaughters Jacquelyn Alicia Wright of Iowa City, Ia. and Louisa Latham Johnston of Palm Beach, Fl., James F. Corn lll, and Odie.
Graveside services will be held at Forest Hills Cemetery on Saturday, November 14th at 3.p.m.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests that those who wish may make contributions to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.
