Obituary of Betty Thatcher Webster

Betty Thatcher Webster, 93, died on April 14, 2016, at Alexian Brothers Valley Residence. She was one of the oldest members of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church where she was baptized as an infant. For many years she served on the Altar Guild, in Education for Ministry, and in Steven Ministry. While living on Lookout Mountain for many years, she was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd. She was a graduate of The Bright School, Girls Preparatory School, the University of Chattanooga, and McKenzie Business College. At GPS, she was the editor of the year book. At UC, she was President of her senior class and President of Chi Omega Sorority. As a lifelong member of the Junior League of Chattanooga, she gave time as a volunteer in the Bargain Mart, in sponsored horse shows, and at the Moccasin Bend Psychiatric Hospital. She was a member of the Dogwood Hunt and Polo Club and the long-standing Friday Morning Study Club. She was a practitioner of yoga for many years and was a voracious reader. In her professional career she worked for Murphree Mortgage Company, the McMillan Insurance Agency, and as business manager for Girls Preparatory School. After retirement, she worked part-time for the Chattanooga Regional History Museum and volunteered at the Community Kitchen. She was preceded in death by her father, Hugh Lynn Thatcher, mother, Katherine Kaufmann Thatcher, sister, Starr Thatcher Klein, sister, Kitty Thatcher Green, brother, Hugh Lynn Thatcher, Jr. and daughter, Katie Hickey. Survivors include James L. (Mary Ann) Webster, of Signal Mountain; daughter, Lynn (Woody) Collins of Sheldon, SC; granddaughters, Laura Webster of Chattanooga, and Alexandra Webster of Haleiwa, Hi.; grandson, David Webster of Chattanooga; and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be on Saturday, April 30, from 12-1 p.m. with a memorial service starting at 1 p.m. following visitation at St. Paul’s, 305 West 7th Street. In lieu of flowers, please consider a gift to Metropolitan Ministries or the Community Kitchen. Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home & Cremation Center, at the foot of historic Lookout Mountain, St. Elmo, 423 821-7551.
