Obituary of Ronald L. Hughes, Sr.

Ronald L. Hughes, Sr., 71, of Chattanooga passed away on Thursday, October 26th, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.   Ronald was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, who enjoyed playing golf and watching sports, but most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.   He was born in Monroe, Michigan on February 15, 1952, to the late Mr. James T. Hughes and Mrs. Marian Jane (Smith) Hughes. Ronald was a 1970 graduate of Kirkman Technical High School. He received his first U.S. Air Force duty assignment after basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. He was later assigned to a unit of the Strategic Air Command at Minot AFB, N.D.   He retired after working many years as a Sheet Metal Mechanic in Construction. Ronald also worked as a ranger/starter at many different golf courses in Chattanooga, playing golf with family, and many new and old friends. Many of his golfing friends knew him as “Daddy One Putt!”   Ronald loved to travel with several favorite destinations, such as Alaska, Yellowstone and Jackson Hole.   He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Virginia Melton Hughes; sons, Ron L. Hughes, Jr. and Jason L. Hughes; grandchildren, Austin B. Hughes (Devan Rae), Alexandra B. Hughes, Elijah B. Hughes, and Scarlett B. Hughes; brother, James T. Hughes, Jr. (Janie), and several brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces. A visitation will be held at Chattanooga Memorial Funeral Home in Lookout Valley on Tuesday, October 31st at 10:00 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 12 Noon with Chaplain Ronnie Case officiating.   Interment with military honors will follow in Chattanooga National Cemetery.   Arrangements are by Wann Funeral & Cremation Center at the foot of historic Lookout Mountain, St. Elmo.
