Edward Waterhouse
Edward Franklin Waterhouse, 70, passed away on Thursday, December 7 with his wife
Langhorne by his side.
He graduated from Baylor School and Northfield Mount Hermon. He received his undergraduate degree from Harvard College and his master's degree from Vanderbilt University. Ed utilized his gift for counseling those in crisis through positions at Crossroads Treatment Center, Project Adventure Inc., the Scholtz Center for Adolescents and the Victim Offender Reconciliation Program. He was a small business owner for over 16 years, and at the time of his passing, an Eligibility Counselor with the TN Department of Human Services. A lifelong athlete, he and Langhorne enjoyed weekend bicycle adventures. Long drawn to spiritual studies, they both enjoyed participating in the EfM program at Grace Episcopal and the Sacred Studies workshops at Church of the Good Shepherd. Affectionately known as Eddie, Big Ed and even “Big Un”, he was a voracious reader and usually had 2 or 3 books going at once. He was a devoted husband, a loving brother and uncle, a loyal friend, and a wise and gentle
soul. He is deeply missed.
Ed was a native of Lookout Mountain, TN and a resident of Chattanooga, TN. He was preceded in death by his parents, Susan Gelsthorpe Bryan and James Franklin Waterhouse; his niece, Susan Alison Waterhouse; and his aunt and uncle, Mary Ann and Edward Gelsthorpe.
Survivors include his wife, Langhorne Chipley Waterhouse; his brothers, James Waterhouse (Janet) of Oakland, CA; Albert Mills Waterhouse of Chattanooga, TN; Richard Waterhouse (Caleb) of Atlanta, GA, and cousins, Cindy Gelsthorpe Fish (John); Seth Gelesthorpe; Tom Gelsthorpe; and Ted Gelsthorpe (Marcie) of Boston and Cape Cod, MA. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Harriet Chipley of Lookout Mountain, TN; brother-in-law Bill Chipley of Ridgway, CO; sisters-in-law Caroline Chipley
Johnson (Bruce) of Chattanooga, TN and Harriet Chipley Swenson of Durango, CO. Also survived by nephews Albert Mills Waterhouse, Jr; Jim Massengale III (Lauren); Bill Massengale; Hunter Swenson and Will Swenson; nieces Amanda Waterhouse, Rachel Waterhouse, Susan Schmonsees (Ryan).
Visitation will be at 2:30 PM on Friday, December 15th at Church of the Good Shepherd, followed by the service and interment.
