Frank was a man of great integrity! He was always generous with his knowledge and was a man of his word. My father, Canadian art dealer, Thomas L. Beckett and I enjoyed many years working on Andrew, Jamie and N.C. Wyeth art deals as we worked together to find new homes for these extraordinary paintings. I only wish I was able to thank Frank one last time for being such a wonderful and welcoming man to work and deal with. Rest in peace Frank. You lived a colourful and full life! Best wishes & respect to the Fowler family, Sincerely, Tom Beckett, Beckett Fine Art, Hamilton, ON. ,Canada.

In 1964, a year I spent largely with Frank and his friend Herbie Oakes, Frank produced a .45 record of an all-black dance band. Seemingly alone, he arranged for a Nashville studio to make the recording, then drove himself and the band to Nashville for the date. The record did not chart, due to no fault of Frank’s. In the backseat of his white Catalina convertible he carried corrugated boxes of the pressings to every place that might sell records. The records lived in the backseat for a month or two. I know, because I was in the backseat on excursions around Chattanooga, which included visits to the band’s base, a bar deep within Alton Park. The owner told us we were the first white boys to come there. For me, probably for Herbie too, the experience was much more profound than we knew at the time. Frank thought nothing of it. The guy was all over town and not even eighteen. He became an important outlier, a statistical aberration in the first year of the Civil Rights Act. All Frank could see was the beauty of the band—especially hot when live—and the business deal at hand. He was acting according to his own DNA scripts. Certainly such scripts were not handed to us. It’s good to remember how sociable and kind Frank was. And how much fun. My, what fun we all had.
He was also courageous.

Like all his friends, I was so very saddened to learn of Frank’s passing. He packed a lot of living into his 78 years, and he thoroughly enjoyed all his family and friends.
He practiced quiet altruism, helping others and countless worthy causes quietly without seeking credit or accolades. He was a patron to numerous artists, helping to get their careers started and their works properly noted. Here on the coast, he jump started the successful career of a very talented artist of the Low Country named Alan Campbell.
Frank was very highly-regarded in his years in South Carolina. For years he ate lunch every day at Low Country Produce restaurant near his home on Dean Hall Plantation. One day the owner of the restaurant told Frank that his landlord was selling the property so he would have to close his doors. Frank’s solution?…he bought the building and continued his daily lunches uninterrupted. The restaurant had a chair made with a brass plate that said “Reserved for Frank Fowler” and they named an item on the menu for him…”The Frank Furter” hot dog.
As noted above, Frank was a hell of a tarpon fisherman, to the point of obsessive-compulsive behavior. No matter the weather or circumstances, if the tides were right Frank and Fuzzy Davis would be chasing the fish. Frank never killed a fish…always releasing them so they could go get bigger and stronger and he could catch them again. Those heavenly tarpon better watch out!
Tight lines to my good friend and we will see you around the bend.
