Obituary of Allen Campbell Brown

Please share a memory of Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
“My honor is dearer to me than my life.” Allen Campbell Brown, a man known for his high integrity and wonderful sense of humor, died unexpectedly Saturday while walking to see two of his five children play golf at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. He was 66. A man of vast interests and accomplishments, Allen was a passionate family man, a lifelong student, a successful businessman, an avid golfer and a staunch supporter of The Baylor School. He was an engaged and spirited conversationalist, while always keeping the importance of loving relationships paramount. Allen was known for his distinct and infectious laugh which will be remembered by all. It was his trademark. Allen graduated from the Baylor School in 1968, where he was Chairman of the Honor Council and lettered in three sports: golf, football and wrestling. He graduated from Washington and Lee in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts and a Certificate in Commerce. While at W&L, he was president of SAE, a member of the Sigma Society and played golf and football as a freshman. Upon graduation, Allen worked as a Financial Analyst for Provident Life and Accident Insurance Company. In 1978, he founded the first discount brokerage firm in Chattanooga, along with his brother, Huxley, under the aegis of Brown Associates Inc., a company started by his late father, Ed Brown. He became president of the company in 1986 - a position he held until his death. He was a member of the National Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts, the National Institute of Chartered Life Underwriters and was a Certified Financial Planner. He also holds the CLTC (Certified in Long-Term Care) designation, and is a member of various professional organizations including The Estate Planning Council of Chattanooga, TN. He was also Managing Partner of Garth + Brown Investment Management, LLC. Allen served on the Board of Trustees of Baylor, where he was currently head of the endowment committee. He was a member, past president and board member of the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. He belonged to the Fairyland Club and Mountain City Club. He served as a city councilman for the town of Lookout Mountain, GA and was joint president of the Fairyland School PTO when his children were attending. He was an active member of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church. Allen and his wife, Emily, are the parents of a daughter and four sons and grandparents of four granddaughters and one grandson. Their marriage was a magical journey, with loads of fun along the way at home and on family vacations to Perdido Bay, AL, John’s Island, FL and Charleston, SC. They were married for 41 years. They also took a keen interest in their children’s activities, never missing any of their events. To liven up baseball games for many years at Baylor, Allen started playing tunes from the press box as “WBAY: Tunes by Odie Brown” – much to the enjoyment and amusement of players and spectators. Allen was a committed seeker of knowledge and self improvement. His morning routine began with a brisk 4-mile walk to the golf course and back. For the past year, he delighted in reading his Bible each night. Allen was preceded in death by his parents, Edward E. Brown, Jr and Esther A. Brown; his brother-in-law George N. Dickinson; and his parents-in-law, Winston F. Garth and Emily T. Garth. He is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Emily Garth Brown; his daughter, Emily B. Johnson (Blake); his four sons, Campbell, Garth, Winston (Emily) and Robby; his four siblings, Ted Brown, Sanford Dickinson, Huxley Brown (Rhonda) and Harvey Brown; his grandchildren, Wyatt Brown; Caroline and Allie Johnson; and Isabella Davis and Francis Brown. Allen shared a deep friendship with Emily’s brothers and their spouses: Winston Garth (Kay); Bob Garth (Shirley); Thornton Garth (Sharon); Tom Garth (Susan); John Garth (Rhoda); and Fred Garth (Blair). He also leaves behind many loving aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces and cousins. We will all miss our “Odie” Brown. A funeral mass will be held at 11 AM, Wednesday, July 27 at Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church, Lookout Mountain, GA. Family will greet visitors at 9:30 AM in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Baylor School, Chattanooga, TN; or to a charity of your choice.
