Obituary of Mary Catherine McGirr

Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Catherine McGirr, 82, a longtime Hixson resident has passed from this world into Eternal Glory. She was a Christian that spent her life sharing the love of Christ. She would often say, "Its been a joy for me to sit down with anyone who would listen to Gods word". Catherine was the eldest daughter of Samuel V. and Mamie Miller and one of 10 children. She was born on June 23, 1934. She was the only one of her siblings to be born in a hospital (Erlanger). Although most of her life was spent in the Hixson community she had lived in Alaska, Florida and Ohio. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy McGirr; a daughter, Deborah Reynolds; a grandson, Michael Anthony McGirr; one sister, and three brothers. She is survived by her sons, Kenneth (Barb), Michael, and Charles; daughters, Jacqueline Goulette (Ron), Hope Carr (Robert); sisters, Ellen L. Headrick, Evelyn Birdwell, Dorothy Powers (Hugh), Lois Westmoreland and Frieda Howard; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews including nephew, Todd W. Maynor (Stephanie) whom she loved as a son and often stated the stork dropped off to the wrong sister; and niece, Carol Padgett whom she loved very much. To know her was to love her. Her wonderful smile and infectious laughter will stay with us forever. She stated a few days before passing that we need to remember to love one another and enjoy life every single day because it ends way too quickly. Though she was Blessed with 82 long years it did go by too fast. She would always say to tell the ones close to you how much they mean to you. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday, September 7, 2016 in Chattanooga National Cemetery with Chaplain Ricky Vaughn officiating. We ask that in lieu of flowers that a donation be made in her name to either The Alzheimers Association or The American Heart Association. Special thanks to her beloved granddaughter, Olivia Goulette for caring for her and Amedisys Hospice. Arrangements are by Legacy Funeral Home and Cremation Center.
