Obituary of Virginia M. Carnes

Virginia Malice Carnes was born June 26, 1928, in Burlington, New Jersey of Albert F.B. Malice and Angela J. Malice (nee Rampona). She died November 22, 2016, at the age of 88, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She was predeceased by her brothers, Eugene L Malise of Greenwich, Connecticut and Raymond M. Malice of Burlington, New Jersey. She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Donald E. Carnes, her son, Judge Steven L. Carnes of Tallahassee, Florida, and her two granddaughters, Dr. Lee Ann Annotti and Alexandra Carnes. Mrs. Carnes attended the Maryland College for Women before transferring to the University of Alabama where she graduated in 1950 with a degree in education. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. She subsequently earned a Master’s Degree in psychology from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she graduated first in her class. She earned 65 graduate credits towards a PhD at the University of Pennsylvania. Mrs. Carnes began teaching in the Chattanooga School District in 1950. She and her family moved to Bucks County Pennsylvania in 1958, and she began teaching English and history in the Pennsbury School District in Falls Township, Pennsylvania. After attaining her Master’s Degree, she became employed as a guidance counselor in the Bensalem School District, Bensalem Township, Pennsylvania. She retired in 1986. She and her husband were active in the Masonic Order and Eastern Star. She twice served as Worthy Matron of her local chapter, and in 1977 served as a Grand Officer in New Jersey as Fraternal Correspondent. She was First Lady of Crescent Temple, in Trenton New Jersey in 1986 when her husband served as Potentate. She and her husband moved to Hilton Head Island, South Carolina in 1989, and in 2000, they returned to Chattanooga and resided in Lookout Valley overlooking the Tennessee River until her death. She was a member of the Red Bank Presbyterian Church. A crypt side service will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, November 26, 2016 in Forest Hills Cemetery with Rev. Eric Duble officiating.
