Obituary of Vivian Doris Cates Hicks

Vivian Doris Cates Hicks, a longtime resident of Chattanooga died peacefully on October 8, 2014. She was 92.
Doris Hicks was born on December 21, 1921 in Birmingham, Alabama to William Prentice and Mary Lou (Renfroe) Cates. She was a 1946 graduate of the University of Tennessee. She earned a masters degree from the University of Chattanooga. During and after World War II, she was employed by TVA in Knoxville and Chattanooga. She taught at the Margaret Wilson School, Girls Preparatory School, and Fairyland School. She retired from Walker County Georgia Schools as a special education teacher.
On October 12, 1946, she married Albert Barrett Hicks in Knoxville, Tennessee. Their marriage lasted 53 years until his death in 1999.
She was a 62 year member of Second Presbyterian Church, where she was a deacon, Presbyterian Women moderator, and a member of the Knit-Wits.
She was a 60 year member of the Daughters of the American Revolution; a past regent of the Nancy Ward Chapter DAR; a charter member of the Prudhomme Fort Chapter, Colonial Dames XVII Century; a Hamilton County master gardener; and a member of the Fairyland Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents and her brothers William Paul Cates and Joseph Cates, and sisters Frances Irene Cates and Mary Louise Cates.
Survivors include her daughter Ellen Blanche Hicks (Glenn Griner), Lookout Mountain, Georgia; Albert Barrett Hicks, Jr., (Anne), Birmingham, Alabama; and Prentice Nathaniel Hicks (Maryon Wright); seven grandchildren: Albert Barrett Hicks III (Yige), Kelley Griner, Katherine Bednasek (Jason), Hannah Wright (Andy Lewis), Stephen Hicks, Chloe Wright, and Elizabeth Hicks, and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Friday at 11:00 am at Second Presbyterian Church with graveside service to follow at 12:30 at Chattanooga National Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to the King's Chest Fund at Second Presbyterian Church.
