Obituary of Ruth Helen Mitchell

Ruth G. Mitchell passed away on Monday, November 3, 2014 at age 94. She was born in 1920 in Turlock, California, and lived in southern California until she moved to the Chattanooga area in 1952. Ruth’s father, George U. Gammon, was a pastor in Fillmore, California when she was growing up. She attended Occidental College and married a navy sailor, David E. Mitchell, soon after WWII. They had many adventures together for 52 years. Ruth was also an elementary school teacher in California and Tennessee. In Tennessee she taught at Lookout Mountain School and Valley View School. After Dave and Ruth retired, Dave built a sailboat called “Praise The Lord” in which they sailed away together on various mission trips from Chattanooga to Alaska. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, George and Helen Gammon; her husband, David E. Mitchell; her daughter, Mary M. Kinder; and her brother, Hugh Gammon. She is survived by her son, David (Maria) Mitchell; grandchildren, Beth (Mark) Nagle and Helen Higgins; niece, Kathy Mohs,; and nephew, Doug Gammon, Jr. Funeral services for Mrs. Mitchell will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday November 11, 2014 at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Joe Novenson officiating. Interment will be at 2:00 PM EST on Tuesday in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Lebanon, TN. The family will receive friends from 5-8 PM on Monday, November 10, 2014 at the funeral home and from 9:00 AM until the time of the service on Tuesday at the church.
