Peter Van Wyck Platt
Born April 25, 1930 and died October 26, 2023
Born on April 25, 1930, in Evanston, Illinois, he was the son of Henry Russell Platt Jr. and
Mary Pace nee Labrunerie and grandson of Chicago-area legal pioneer Henry Russell
Platt, founder of Mayer Brown & Platt. He was preceded in death by his parents; his
brother Henry Russell Platt III; his sister-in-law Barbara Platt, and his beloved wife,
Anne Platt.
After graduating from Fountain Valley School in 1949, he attended and graduated from
the University of Virginia. Following a tour of duty with the United States Army
where he was stationed in Japan with the Counter-Intelligence Corp, he moved to
New York City where he worked at Standard Knitting Mills in their sales department.
It was there in New York that he met and married his wife of 62 years, Anne Haire
Platt. He and Anne relocated to Standard’s headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee,
where their two children Russell Christopher Platt and Julia Platt Leonard were born.
Latterly Peter and Anne lived in Columbus, Ohio and Winston-Salem, North Carolina,
before relocating to Chattanooga in 1977, settling on Missionary Ridge. He worked
at Signal Knitting Mills in the sales department until his retirement when he and his
wife moved to Lookout Mountain where he lived for the rest of his life.
He was a member of Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church. He cherished his time with
the local investment club, was a keen golfer, and an avid traveller with his wife and
friends. A committed Anglophile, he was often seen with his beloved corgis. During
his younger years, he was also an avid downhill skier, ran track, and was a member
of the University of Virginia boxing team.
Peter is survived by his two children and two grandchildren, Henry Russell Platt IV and
Lila Clarisse Leonard. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m. November 27 with a service at
11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary of the Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.
