Obituary of Henry King McGee

Henry King McGee died Aug. 12, 2024, at Abe’s Garden Community in Nashville, Tenn. He was the son of Tallulah King McGee and George Ernest McGee Jr. of Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and was born on July 9, 1934. His grandparents were Mr. and Mrs. Henry King and Mr. and Mrs. George E. McGee Sr., all of Chattanooga, Tenn. He graduated from Baylor School. His degree in history was from the University of South Carolina, where he was affiliated with Kappa Alpha fraternity. After serving as a Lt. j.g. in the U.S. Navy, he was employed by Fleetwood Coffee of Chattanooga. Other business affiliations were with J.C. Bradford & Co. and Equitable Securities Corp. of Nashville.
He is survived by two brothers, George Ernest McGee III (dec. Corinne) and John Divine McGee II (Mary), all of Lookout Mountain. His daughters are Hontas McGee Lowrance (Fred Templeton Lowrance, Jr.) and Rachel James McGee Chenery (John Taylor Chenery) of Nashville. His grandchildren are McGee Templeton Lowrance, Tallulah Frances Lowrance, Harriet Moore Lowrance, James Gordon Chenery, Levi King Chenery and Wesley Hollis Chenery.
Memberships and interests included the Hillsboro Hounds, Owl’s Hill Nature Sanctuary, Belle Meade Country Club and YMCA of Middle Tennessee. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Nashville where he participated as an elder, serving on the World and Foreign Mission Committee and the John Hill Eakin trustees committee. He attended Glen Leven Presbyterian Church, also in Nashville. King was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, friend and neighbor and always appreciated for his sense of humor.
A Nashville visitation will be held 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16, at Belle Meade Country Club. Burial and service will be at Forest Hills Cemetery in Chattanooga at 2 p.m. Monday, Aug. 19, followed by a celebration at Lookout Mountain Golf Club.
